Prologue

“The rumor is three black boys killed your parents. Is it true?”

Perched on the edge of his cot, Noah Charleston lifted his eyes to look at the four half-men standing before him. The leader of the pack, Mitch, was sixteen with a baby face, braces and bad acne around his chin. His two muscles, twins Roger and Wylie, were about a year older at seventeen. Both were built like linebackers. Finally, the Whiz, or Matthew a slender fifteen year old with glasses that took up half of his face was the brain of the group.

“Answer him,” Roger prodded, stepping into the small cell.

Noah shrugged. “That was a year ago.”

“We can do something about that.” Mitch popped his gum. “Join us.”

Noah had heard about the “Avengers” as they dubbed themselves. They ruled the juvenile detention hall and dressed in their version of combat gear: khaki pants, boots and camouflage shirts. Even the counselors were afraid of them.

Noah kept to himself. Everyone pretty much left him alone. Except for today.

He looked up at them. “Do I have a choice?”

Wylie stepped forward. “Do you want me to help you make up your mind?”

“How about I help fix that ugly face of yours?” Noah threw back.

Wylie sprung at Noah. Noah jumped to his feet and sidestepped the much bigger guy. Then he bashed Wylie in the back of the head. Roger lunged at him.

“Quit it,” Mitch bellowed. “Leave him alone.”

Roger’s chest heaved but he backed off. His eyes held a threat. Noah met his gaze, daring him to bring it.

“I like your heart,” Mitch said. “We need you.”

“I like my own company,” Noah said.

“We have something you want,” the Whiz said. His voice was barely above a whisper. He wheezed his words as if he was always in need of an asthma pump.

“You don’t have—”

Noah’s eyes widened. The Whiz held a crumpled 3×5 photograph in his hand. Noah snatched it, “Where did you find this?”

“We have our ways,” Mitch bragged.

Noah squinted.

“I hacked into the computer system,” the Whiz said. This time he coughed at the end of his words. “I know who took your picture.”

“We’ve handled him.” Mitch’s tone was solemn.

“That’s why you should be thanking us,” Wyle said, rubbing the back of his head.

Noah looked at the photograph of his parents and closed his eyes to keep the tears from falling. It was his most prized possession. When he had been sent here to the juvenile home two months ago, Noah had placed it under his pillow before lunch. When he checked for it later that night, it had been gone. He searched everywhere but couldn’t find it. That was the first time since his parents’ funeral Noah had cried himself to sleep.

“Thank you,” he grounded out.

“Thank us by joining us,” Mitch said.

The Whiz held up a picture. It was an African-American by the name of Tony Billows who had taken it.

Noah clenched his fists. “Where is he?”

“In the hospital with some missing teeth,” Roger said.

“And a missing pinky,” Wylie added.

Noah blinked. He would have settled it with a well-deserved punch or two. Not doing Tony serious injury. “That was vicious.”

“It was a message. You mess with one of us you mess with us all. We’re a family,” Mitch said.

“The Avengers,” Wylie and Roger said in unison. They held out their fists. Noah had reservations but Mitch had used the magic word. Family. Noah wanted family. He made a fist and the boys all did a fist bump.

“The Avengers,” he said.

“Welcome,” Mitch said.

“Glad to have you,” The Whiz whispered. “Now, let’s get you some proper clothes and a haircut.”

Noah swallowed his reservations. He had a family again. Nothing else mattered.

About The Author

J. Alex Blane is an author whose debut Novel “Where We Left Off” was his first break in the literary world of fiction romantic suspense, but definitely not his last as he is currently working on both his second & third novels within the series. A Multi-Media developer by trade; “J. Alex Blane is a talented man whose creativity is exceptional!” – Katrina Coleman (Amazon).
Since Alex could remember, it has always been his dream to write a novel. After nearly eight years of deciding to put a single ballpoint pen to a piece of paper he finally finished placing the last period at the end of the last sentence and introduced readers to Where We Left Off, a story that has evolved into something to this day he will say he never expected and in some cases transcending the definition of its genre.

Alex currently resides in Bear, Delaware with his wife and his two children where they share a small home just right for him to sneak off into a little corner and write more of what he loves and where he is currently at work on his next novel. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Nu Upsilon Chapter in Wilmington, Delaware, a father and a husband. Alex loves to tell a good story, but more than that he loves to make you feel as if you are right there as it’s happening.

Where We Left Off.

Comment
I enjoyed this book ! The characters were interesting, real and vibrant. I love the theme of forgiveness and healing from betrayal and feeling abandoned by those who should protect you. While there are some areas that could have been improved upon, this story was a refreshing romance with unexpected twists and turns. This is a story of devotion, pain, being blinded with unforgiveness and hope. A great love story of how God can work all things together for our good. I look forward to the sequel.

Practical Advice for Writers

Practical Advice for Beginning Fiction (or other genre) Writers

If I could give any advice to beginning fiction writers I would say this: Just write. One of the biggest mistakes we make a freshman authors is that we are overwhelmingly seduced by the ideas that we are not enough, that we don’t know as much, or can write as good as those appearing on New York Times, and National Best Seller Lists. We are …you are just as good if not better. What you write is about you and your story, your characters and your plots be it fiction or otherwise. Regardless of how much you may think or hear that “we’ve heard this story or we’ve seen his before”, YOUR story hasn’t been told until YOU tell it.

Another piece of advice I would give you is not to rush. When I finished my novel I was ready to publish it and make it ready for the world. I was so happy to place that last period at the end of the sentence until I was willing to overlook the editing process. A friend of mine said to me “this is your first book, and what you put out whether it’s good or bad will determine the level of expectation readers place on you and your next novel. You can put it out without being edited and risk that being your first impression or you can be patient send it to be edited and release it when you are happy with the results. Either way it’s your choice”. From there I actually did a few things. I established a focus group to first read my novel completely unedited just to get their unbiased views and opinions. From that I was able to revise, take away add to etc. After that I submitted to have it edited which helped me to see a lot more. So long advice short, I would say (1) Be confident in your decision to write. (2) Don’t rush progress. (3) Find a trusted and unbiased focus group of friends and family to read your novel. (4) Remember, first impressions are everything.

About The Book

So He Hurt You, Now What? – Messages of Hope for a Hurting Sister is a series of short messages to encourage, uplift and inspire you. Think of a daily message you would send a friend that’s at a very low place in their life. Her husband or boyfriend just left her or she just found out of his betrayal. She’s in shock and kinda frozen….unable to move forward.
We need a voice in our ear that says… Hey Girl – You are going to make it… You are NOT alone… Let me help you get out of this pit you are currently in because you can’t stay there.

In the midst of our storm or “pity party” we need someone that’s not gonna play with us. Somebody that has no other motive but to see us be happy.

That is what you’ll get from – So He Hurt You, Now What? – Messages of Hope for a Hurting Sister

She has helped thousands of women extract purpose from the pain they’ve endured. She has a heart for those on the verge of giving up, like she once was. Her ministry and personal mission is to ensure people are not suffering in silence.

Interview Questions for Nicole Cleveland by Linda Fegins

Describe yourself for our visitors.
My name is Nicole Cleveland. I am founder of Breathe Again Ministries, Radio Host and author of So He Cheated, Now What? and So he Hurt You Now What?
I am a wife, mother, Minister and child of God.
I am on a mission to ensure people are no longer suffering in secret, like I once was.
People are on the verge of giving up and they need to understand how to make it.

How do you find time to connect with God?
I connect with God through prayer and reading the word of God on a daily basis.

What inspired you to write this book?
After writing my first book women would contact me about being hurt. Some from infidelity but many just from being hurt. Pain is pain. I would minister to these women via the phone and made sure I took time with them. Sometimes all we need is a listening ear and an encouraging word. That’s why I wrote this book. I wrote it to encourage my sisters.

Who are your favorite authors and why?? Favorite books?
Vanessa Miller, Kendra Norman, Joyce Meyer, Bishop T.D. Jakes
I have many favorite books. The Rain Series by Vanessa Miller is one of my favorites.

Tell us about your journey to publication.
I always knew I would write a book. I just didn’t know what type of book.
Writing has always been therapy to me. I took pen to paper to share my story to help others.

Tell us about your current book?
“So He Hurt You Now What?” is the follow up to my first book. Many people go through various types of “hurts “in their relationship and it’s not just from infidelity. Pain is pain regardless of how it was inflicted.
“So He Hurt You Now What?” speaks to that woman that’s in shock over the hurt or the betrayal. They are stuck and not sure which way to go. This book says, “Ok, they hurt you, let’s deal with the hurt but let’s continue to live your life. We need you”

How did you come up with ideas for this book?
The messages are messages I would have wanted to hear in the midst of my storm. The book ministered to me, even while writing. I lost my mother in the midst of completing this book and the words, scriptures and prayers blessed me during some difficult days.

What valuable lessons do you want readers to learn from your book?
“Yes, they may have hurt you and they may have even left you. But that is not the end of you. We need you to get yourself together and live. “

What’s next for you?

    Review of the book

Paulette Harper’s christian novella, Living Separate Lives about four girlfriends Tiffany, Candace, Kaylan and Jordan who reconnect years after high school was quite engaging to me. Paulette Harper‘s realistic characters and storytelling were endearing. Each girlfriend is dealing with issues in her life such as rejection, prejudice, unevenly yoked , never reaching your dreams and at least one is still reacting from the hurt of rejection from her childhood that has lead to poor choices in her adult life. The ladies agree to a girlfriend weekend retreat at Kaylan’s home in Napa Valley region of California. However, the weekend does not turn out how the girlfriends planned. When the truth about one of their lives unexpectedly is discovered accidentally ,the impact upon the life of another causes anger, betrayal and further rejection to show its ugly head. Now the girlfriends really need to go before the King to pray, praise and seek the face of the Lord, when one of them is asked to leave the retreat. Can the ladies who profess to be a Christian forgive the perpetrator? How do you reach out to the one that betrayed you when she is in trouble? This novella raises real issues about friendship, forgiveness, your walk of faith in hurting times and wanting to support a friend in the good times and the bad times. It is an excellent minstry tool for the women’s minsitry or for a workshop on forgivenss and forgetting the past.

About The Book

Are the sins of the father and mother visited upon their sons and daughters?

Undoubtedly damaged, Honey Lamb, like many, is a descendant of an unfortunate legacy of molestation, addiction, murder and bad decisions. For as long as she could remember, she believed the unhappiness she experienced was somehow bequeathed to her. The blood that surged through her veins seemed to be tainted and she often wondered about the DNA she possessed. Experiencing more than her share of misery at the hands of her mother, an alcoholic; the source of all her woes, Honey believed she’d overcome her seemingly checkered path all by herself when she met and married, Mason; a man she loves beyond her own understanding. Unfortunately, unsettling memories emerge to crack the veneer of her seemingly happy existence. Feeling unable to escape what she believed to be her destiny, Honey makes a decision that may have ruined her life. Not realizing God places people in our lives for His purpose, she reluctantly embarks upon a journey that will open her heart to a divine inheritance. Will she accept what God has already given to her or will she shun the invitation of salvation and allow her familial carnal legacy to continue to the next generation? Will she come to understand that Jesus’ blood redeemed us from a self-defeating existence because He became the sinful inheritance for us while at the same time eradicating it forever, giving us a spiritual blood transfusion that would change us all?

PROLOGUE

Northern Italy, 1918

He hadn’t washed in weeks. The countryside was crawling with “Kraut” and all he could do was think about the full lips that said his name with uninhibited desire. She made him feel invincible and he needed to believe he was. He would have done anything to have and to keep her.

Those eyes…

She moved over him like a cunning feline. Under her spell, he promised he would keep her brother Tanner quiet about everything. He had no idea how he was going to silence the man who had become his friend, but he wasn’t going to let anyone ruin their plans. As he walked back to camp after visiting a makeshift latrine, his thoughts took him back to their night together. Intoxicated by cheap wine, he’d agreed to the pact. She was beautiful, strong, and most of all, determined. He wanted to believe that they would have a good life once this useless war was over.

After settling into the muddy trench, he saw something almost imperceptibly move. Italy could have been a beautiful place if it wasn’t for this God forsaken war, he thought, rubbing his eyes. He was unbelievably fatigued; so much so that foliage seemed to be moving by itself. He closedhis eyes and opened them again to focus. Was there someone or something out there? He couldn’t wait until he was back in the U. S. of A. More importantly, he couldn’t wait to be with her. He could still smell her. She was a vision… a sweet temptress

Book Reviewbanner-the-blood-done-signed-my-name

Are we more than conquerors over betrayal, rejection, hatred and “generational curses” through Jesus Christ whose blood redeemed us from the curse of the law and sins of the past? The Blood Done Signed My Name by M. Ann Ricks is an engaging and touching Christian fiction novel. It shows the  how the main character, Honey Lamb, struggles with her past and allows her actions to hurt  her present life and those who love her. We see how Honey learns to stop running from the Lord and the ugliness of her past to open her heart to the Lord to allow Him to forgive her, and to let the Lord ,with her willingness and obedience, break the curse of the sins of the past in her life. This is a moving and entertaining piece  based on the truth of God’s Word without being preachy, that shows the redeeming power and love of GOD  that allow us to be more than conquerors over adverse circumstances

Book Review by Linda Fegins

In this third installment of the Chosen series, Broken by Patricia Haley, readers are re-introduced to the Mitchell family, an African American family living in Detroit, Michigan, who own a multimillion business and ministry. However this powerful family is plagued with issues of family strife, anger, sibling rivalry, infidelity, impact of divorce on everyone, difficulty in forgiving transgressions, and learning to  let go of the past and to forgive .

I loved the characters created as Haley’s savvy craftsmanship and the real life issues lead me to become so engaged that I disliked a few as though they were real persons I knew. After reading Destined  prior to Broken, I read with expectancy to see how Don Mitchell would attempt the task of mending this broken family and put the family business together again  in light of the  challenges of conflicting plans and attitudes of the siblings and complicated relationships and loyalties. So engaging was this inspirational novel in which, Patricia Haley has based the story on King David  and the family drama that surrounded him, I recommended that my Christian book ministry club read the book. While a few disliked some characters such as Tamara ( me too) and could not grasp how a training ministry could do  the level of billion dollar business mentioned ( not me), they found the novel intriguing and suspenseful, filled with real life biblical issues, which kept them glued to the last page. Many decided that they just had to read the prior novels of the series.

Patricia Haley has penned not just a great story, but one that subtly, yet profoundly if that makes sense, addresses how we struggle and respond to issues of betrayal and rejection and the scriptural importance of forgiveness and walking in faith and love without preaching to us. There was indeed so much truth in the book to make the fiction feel real.

  November 11,2011 by L.Fegins

Having read Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, Destined, Broken and thereafter, lastly  Chosen, I needed to ask this inspirational and thought provoking writer a few questions.

Why did you select Detroit for the home of the family?

Ans. All my novels are based in areas where I’ve lived and/or traveled. It adds an extra piece to the story when I can incorporate elements of the city.  My books are primarily based in Detroit, Chicago, and Philadelphia.

What lead you to create this series?

Ans. Inspiration for the Chosen series came from one of my all time favorite characters in the Bible, King David. He is an imperfect man plagued with family tragedy, personal failures, and constant battles. Yet, he is remembered as someone highly favored by God.  I’m equally intrigued by his son, Solomon. I’m equally intrigued by King David’s son Solomon who managed to squander away his noteworthy position of power, wealth, and godly favor after succumbing to his weakness for women. Joel plays the role of Solomon in Chosen and Destined as the son of Dave Mitchell. At the conclusion of Chosen, readers weren’t satisfied with only an epilogue ending. They wanted more. So, Destined was born. Then, I couldn’t stop with just tales of the Mitchell men. In Broken, the women have something to say as well, particularly the high-spirited estranged daughter, Tamara.

What suggestions do you have for writers on the business side and the creative write side?

Ans. My suggestion to writers is that writing is the creative side. and publishing is all about business. You have to understand the difference and recognize that having talent on one side might not carry over the other. You may be a great writer and lousy businessperson. Fear not, that’s why you’d want to get an agent and shop a deal for as long as it takes to get published. If you’re confortable with conducting the business component, then you have the options of self-puslishing or seeking a mainstream publisher. How much time, support, investment capital, and patience will dictate the path best suited for you. No matter whether you publish or get published, do your homework. Understand how costs, royalties, contracts, and other key elements work. You are your most trusted advocate.

Do you have any writing courses?

Ans. Periodically I teach writing workshops at conferences. I tend to focus on getting writer’s started. Although I don’t do courses on a regular basis, I highly recommend venues such as the Iowa Writer’s weekend summer courses. I went a couple of times early in my writing career and it was very instrumental in helping me begin learning the craft.

If she gets to know Angelina Preston, she can become like her in more than just looks, and really work her way into Greg’s heart.

Angelina Preston’s life is filled with a successful career and busy ministry work, but something’s just not right with her marriage. Late nights, early meetings, lipstick- and perfume-stained shirts have her suspicious that Greg is doing a little more operating than she’d like. But does she have the strength to confront the only man she’s ever loved and risk losing him to the other woman

Just when Samaria thinks she’s got it all figured out, she finds herself drawn to Angelina’s kindness. Will she be able to carry out her plan after she finds herself yearning for the one thing she’s never had . . . the friendship of a woman?

 Book Review by Linda Fegins

First I must confess that I was not  excited about reading this book. Oh , another cheating husband and a women fighting for her husband. Same oh song.

Not so. OMG! From the first  two pages (really first) ,Rhonda McKnight and her character Samaria and the Women’s Bible Study group  had me.  I read the first page and the half of the second page again.  I wrote on the page great opening.   Throughout the book  you see McKnight’s writing skill and grace with a jazzy style. This story  was  more than just about a  cheating husband and a scheming un-churched  woman who dared to go to the same church as the wife, sit in the wife’s  Women’s Bible Study  class and befriend her  so that she could become her clone and steal her husband. Scandalous!  This is a fresh creative story by Rhonda McKnight.

The heart of the story is about women friendships, trust,  redemption and  how even in the midst of mess God can use it to make a change in a heart for His Glory. You walk with the characters as they address issues of disappointment ,  betrayal ,forgiveness, low self-esteem  and overcoming patterns of  living a negative lifestyle and mindset. The characters were  memorable , real and well-developed.

I can’t wait for the sequel.   How will Samaria change her life around and can she help her mother?  Will she find love and peace?  Will successful Angelina leave her handsome surgeon husband?    Can Angelina find a way to forgive Samaria who has come to admire and respect her and truly think of her  as a beautiful virtuous women who was the first woman to every truly show her love and real friendship?
